take up arms

oh, I don’t take up arms
no, I don't take up arms
oh, I don't take up arms
no, I don't take up arms
I've burned all of my white flags
what a clean burning fire
I think it’s time I retired,
this is a good place to rest
didn’t you know there’s a war on
didn’t you say any vows
the courtesies, all the bows
aren’t worth the bayonettes.
so I don’t take up arms
no I don’t take up arms
oh I don't take up arms
no I don't take up arms
nobody will sing songs for me
that’ll be a quiet shame
what’ll they write on my grave
this anonymous fantasy
I’m Achilles, I am Sampson
I’m Athena, I'm an Amazon
call me Joan of Arc, or a Valkyrie
just burn my white flags for me
I’m a lover, though I fight it
I’m a fighter, it’s a habit
you know somewhere I read Hamlet said
that I don’t take up arms
no I don’t take up arms
no i don't take up arms
no I don't take up arms
no I don't take up arms
no I don't take up arms
oh I don't take up arms
no I don't take up arms
no I don't take up arms
no I don't take up arms
no I don't take up arms
no I don't take up arms

when we were young
03:24
|

When we were young
We played these games
Now we are grown
I stayed the same
The dirt on my knees like a coffin
Like my skin isn’t holding enough of a dead thing
Now we are grown
Our heads are the leaves
Cold and alone
In dark canopies
A forest of people whose faces
I haven’t seen in a year or a lifetime, maybe
Oh I know I’m hard
And I know I’m fierce
These feel like prayers that won’t reach anybody’s ears
But I know I’m strong
I know I’m still here
But it’s better than the other places I could be
If I let myself go there
When we were young
In body and soul
We thought other bodies
Would make us whole
And that chasm of darkness stayed with me
Like an incomplete puzzle, or an empty house
Now I’m not wise
But I learned by degrees
A person’s a person
With their own liberties
And a flag or a name on a banner
Won’t solve anything, not the matter with me
Oh I know I’m hard
And I know I’m fierce
These feel like prayers that won’t reach anybody’s ears
But I know I’m strong
I know I’m still here
But it’s better than the other places I could be
If I let myself go there
Oh and life is hard
And the storm is fierce
And my prayers don’t reach anybody’s ears
But, I am strong
And I’m still here
I didn’t go the places it tried to take me
I didn’t let myself go there
I know I’m hard (I am hard)
And I am fierce (I am fierce)
And my prayers don't reach anybody’s ears
But I am strong
And I’m still here
I didn't go the places it tried to take me
I didn't let myself go there

baptised

take me down to the river
i got some sins to give you
they'll wash out to sea if it takes
when will these eyes get clearer?
i know i've got a fever
when will it break
i've got a something and
it lives in my nothing and
it gnaws on my veins
i shook it off when the storm came
and it mostly washed away
but a trace still remains
clean clean clean clean clean
it's not as easy as it sounds
oh clean clean clean clean clean
will nothing ever please me 'til i drown?
i was taught how to save my own life
if i was caught in a riptide
i should just wait and float to shore
underneath the sun's reflecting
glass relief, words ascending
i was never baptised before
clean clean clean clean clean
it's not as easy as it sounds
oh clean clean clean clean clean
will nothing ever please me 'til i drown?
clean clean clean clean clean
it's not as easy as it sounds
oh clean clean clean clean clean
will nothing ever please me 'til i drown?
take me down to the river
i got some sins to give you
they'll wash out to sea if it takes
when will these eyes get clearer?
i know i've got a fever
when will it break

lanterns (i bottled it)
03:22

you changed your hair
I barely recognised your face
but we’ve all been there
or at least imagined that place
you got bored and moved out of state
while I found god in a catalogue of mistakes I’ve made
how’s you mother? she was always kind to me
though she didn’t have to be.
I thought of her last week when I ran a bath
your home always smelled of eucalyptus
clean and fresh - oh I’m useless
still thinking about the past
because I had my skin on backwards
just figured out how to right it
and I had to find my way by lanterns
while your road was always sunlit
but I bottled it I bottled it I bottled it
I’m done with it I’m done with it I’m done with this
I bottled it I bottled it I bottled it
I made it myself and I bottled it
yeah I’ve been scared
rooted down in place
you don’t want to know how I fared
in earthquakes
I splintered and snapped
didn’t think I’d rebuild with the little left I had
and I had my skin on backwards
a costume that didn’t quite fit
and I had to find my way by the lanterns
while wishing my road was sunlit
but I bottled it I bottled it I bottled it
I’m done with it I’m done with it I’m done with this
I bottled it I bottled it I bottled it
I made it myself and I bottled it
it often felt like walking backwards
or circling a dark pit
but I found my way by lanterns
put glass around my heart, and that’s how I lit the way
I bottled it I bottled it I bottled it
I’m done with it I’m done with it I’m done with this
I bottled it I bottled it I bottled it
I made it myself and I bottled it
I bottled it I bottled it I bottled it
I’m done with it I’m done with it I’m done with this
I bottled it I bottled it I bottled it
I made it myself and I bottled it
